I went to a LAN party over the weekend, having been invited on VERY short notice. It was pretty cool, got to play UT, and got my tail kicked in my favourite map (Facing Worlds). I really enjoyed grabbing files from everyone else’s computer, this new 250gb drive is really coming in handy, I’ll probably get a couple more in the near future. I showed up at the LAN party with just under 70gb of files on that drive, I came home with over 140gb used, including over 10,000 new MP3 files! I compulsively collect MP3s, and as long as I can find the artist and title information with minimal trouble, any song I find becomes a permanent resident of my collection, regardless of whether I like the song or not. When my old HD drive died, it took 20gb of music with it, leaving me with only the 850mb I had copied to my laptop. My dream is to someday have every song ever made, or at least every song from the 70s and 80s.
A good friend of mine in Annapolis said I could have his 100gb (I think that’s the size he said) MP3 collection to add to mine, which should be around 20,000 files if my calculations are correct (they probably aren’t). I think my MP3s will be getting their own drive
I also found some really good software to rip MP3s from CDs to save me from downloading songs I already have. There are two programs involved, Exact Audio Copy and LAME Audio. I forget exactly where I got them from, but perhaps Kyle can post that helpful step-by-step message board thread on “How to make MP3s that don’t suck” :-). Between that, my wonderful editing software, and my SB Audigy, I have a full audio production studio sitting right on my desk. If anyone wants to hire my audio services, you know where to find me. I think I do a pretty good job at things like remastering/EQ, especially considering my crappy hearing abilities.
It probably seems silly to collect music, but everyone needs a hobby, right?
[EDIT: Kyle posted it. Thanks!]
