Bad News

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

I didn’t get an interview for that job I applied for. When I called to check on my application today, they said they had already contacted people they wanted to interview. Fuck.

I’m so fucking tired of having no money, and I HATE my fucking job. Fuck you, economy!

All About Virginia

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

I keep getting IMs/emails/comments (the usual anonymous crap that isn’t viewable) that Virginia is not a southern state. You people who don’t believe me, look at what Virtual Tourist has to say:

Fuck RMH

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

Today was my first day back at work since the Saturday before my vacation, and my day fucking sucked. It started off bad when I was 15 minutes late, my watch had lost a half-hour while I was at the beach. Thankfully, my boss wasn’t there to bitch about it, but I’m sure she’ll say something when they run the payroll. I proceeded to check on my holding shelf of charts to file, which was immaculately organized when I left. Today, it was in complete chaos, no organization at all, so I had to spend two hours cleaning that up before I could bring over new charts.

Cool Links

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

First of all, this one is kinda silly, and pretty amazing. Nickelback. Those of you who wonder why I avoid the local rock radio stations and spend $10/month on satellite in my car, now you know.

Secondly, for those of you who support Bush, and even those who don’t, this game is for you. I highly encourage everyone to play it at LEAST once, even I learned new stuff :)

One of these days, when I’m not so lazy, I’ll add these to the sidebar over there —>

I need to make more LJ icons.

Spybot - Search & Destroy

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

As many of you may know, I’m a huge fan of the program Spybot - Search & Destroy. So naturally, I was thrilled to see Mr. Kolla come out with a new version, Spybot 1.3. I immediately uninstalled the old version, installed the new one, and I was quite impressed with the look of the new version. I tried to run a scan to see if there were any new malware goodies on my system, but the program locked up like Windows ME every time I tried to scan my new computer. I was pretty disappointed after playing around with it, so I tracked down the forum and started searching for any threads that might solve my problem. Nothing found.

Fast-forward to now, when I was browsing the forums, and found this thread. My problem involved the scan, not the fixing, but I’m no programmer, so I thought they might be related. I posted my log file, and after one of the head honchos saw in my log file that I’m running dual processors, he referred me to this thread. After seeing mention of Hyper-Threading, I tried a little tweak, fixed the problem, asked someone with a dual-Athlon system having a similar problem to try the same thing, fixed it for him, so I posted my solution. The Spybot people were saying that HTT/multi-processors had to be disabled via BIOS, but I pointed out that simply changing the affinity (forcing the process to use only one CPU) accomplished the exact same thing with no downtime, important for server operators like the other guy I consulted (I pretended it was me on the thread for the sake of having a more confident-sounding post, in case y’all were wondering).

I feel helpful now :)

LAN Party

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

I went to a LAN party over the weekend, having been invited on VERY short notice. It was pretty cool, got to play UT, and got my tail kicked in my favourite map (Facing Worlds). I really enjoyed grabbing files from everyone else’s computer, this new 250gb drive is really coming in handy, I’ll probably get a couple more in the near future. I showed up at the LAN party with just under 70gb of files on that drive, I came home with over 140gb used, including over 10,000 new MP3 files! I compulsively collect MP3s, and as long as I can find the artist and title information with minimal trouble, any song I find becomes a permanent resident of my collection, regardless of whether I like the song or not. When my old HD drive died, it took 20gb of music with it, leaving me with only the 850mb I had copied to my laptop. My dream is to someday have every song ever made, or at least every song from the 70s and 80s.

A good friend of mine in Annapolis said I could have his 100gb (I think that’s the size he said) MP3 collection to add to mine, which should be around 20,000 files if my calculations are correct (they probably aren’t). I think my MP3s will be getting their own drive :-P

I also found some really good software to rip MP3s from CDs to save me from downloading songs I already have. There are two programs involved, Exact Audio Copy and LAME Audio. I forget exactly where I got them from, but perhaps Kyle can post that helpful step-by-step message board thread on “How to make MP3s that don’t suck” :-). Between that, my wonderful editing software, and my SB Audigy, I have a full audio production studio sitting right on my desk. If anyone wants to hire my audio services, you know where to find me. I think I do a pretty good job at things like remastering/EQ, especially considering my crappy hearing abilities.

It probably seems silly to collect music, but everyone needs a hobby, right?

[EDIT: Kyle posted it. Thanks!]

I have a lot to talk about, assuming I can remember it all, so I’m going to post a lot this evening. You’ve been warned :-P

Wee! What a trip! I’m too tired, I’ll post about it later.

In other news, I might be going to a LAN party tomorrow, woo!

Vacation

Sunday, June 20th, 2004

Today was the last of my 10 consecutive days to work, and I’m fucking exhausted! I had to leave early a couple days ago because my back was hurting, and today I just sat around and surfed JC Whitney, looking at parts for a truck I don’t have yet. I decided I’m going to set it up as a snowplow rig, with a lightweight low-profile plow blade I found, so if I get this job that’ll be a way to make some extra cash, or at least do a good deed on my days off this winter (since the school district I’m applying to tends to close at the first snowflake). I also REALLY want this to go on my tailgate, ought to go well with the license plates I’ve reserved :)

Suprisingly, I haven’t mentioned this yet, but I’m leaving in exactly 12 hours to go to Myrtle Beach on a family vacation. I’m not a fan of taking family vacations (especially when they’re with MY family), but it’ll be a nice way to relax and recover from all these extra shifts. I just hope she doesn’t try to wake me up at the ass-crack of dawn like she does. I’m on vacation, dammit! I’m nocturnal ANYWAY, so naturally I shouldn’t be expected to get up any earlier than I usually do. We’ll see how it goes.

That’s about it for now, my life has been pretty damn boring and repetitive these last couple days. Everyone wish me luck on this job, I still haven’t gotten a call for an interview yet, but hopefully that’ll happen soon. Also, everyone wish [info]skippyfox well, poor foxie is sick. I dunno if I’ll have internet access down at the beach, but I’ll definitely post a review when I get back.

Furry Inside

Thursday, June 17th, 2004

My “Furry Inside” stickers from fursale.net finally arrived, and they look quite nice on my car :). I put them at the top of my rear-side windows, one on each side, and I’m quite happy with ‘em. Haven’t decided what to say if someone asks about ‘em, I guess it depends on who it is.
