The weekend was great! Well, except for that no-sleep thing.
Work is going great, I was actually on time today! Woo!
I got a new toy today: A voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone adapter from Packet 8. What is it? Well, it’s a magical little box that plugs into my ethernet switch. I plug my phone into it, and can make calls over my broadband connection. I really don’t know why I didn’t sign up for this sooner, I’ve had it less than a day and I’m already thoroughly impressed with it. I can choose any area code I want for my number (I have a Harrisonburg local number now, but I could switch it to Philly if I were planning a trip with people from there like last year), I can take the box anywhere I want and use the same number with it (to get Harrisonburg phone numbers in Myrtle Beach, for example), and I get unlimited long distance to the US and Canada. Features include caller ID, call waiting, call waiting ID, call forwarding, 3-way calling, voicemail, *69, Do Not Disturb (set the phone to automatically switch to voicemail without ringing the phone), and more, all for $20/month. I’m currently paying almost $40/month for my Verizon land line phone, with only caller ID installed, and a few long distance calls. Adding all those other features to my Verizon account would bring my bill to $60 or more easily, not counting long distance fees. It uses suprisingly little bandwidth, and makes almost zero impact on my internet connection. I’m still trying to find a downside to it, which is difficult. I can’t dial 911 or use directory assistance, which I don’t care about (there are other phones in the house to dial 911 from if needed). My phone goes out if my internet connection dies, which I also don’t care about. I can’t call internationally without extra tolls, but the toll rates are very cheap compared to Verizon. I think I’ll be cancelling my Verizon account before the end of the week.
Also, this new phone thing seems pretty stalker-safe, so I might be more freely giving out my number to more friends. We’ll see
My cell phone is still a piece of shit, but at least I can now call my out-of-town friends (who outnumber my in-town friends more than 10 to 1
). Yayness!
