Well, not exactly, but my afternoon resembled one of those old Windows jokes.
Once I got to work today, my boss told me to go to Wal-Mart to get an extension cord for our new printer. I was driving the Rover, and I locked it with the key like normal (the transmitter isn’t programmed, and the one that used to work is broken). After getting the extension cord, I went back to the truck, unlocked it, and the horn started honking repetitively. Somehow, the alarm armed itself for no apparent reason, which shouldn’t be possible because there’s no working transmitter. Since it’s a factory alarm, there’s no possible way to start it unless the alarm is deactivated, and deactivation requires a transmitter. There was no bypass mentioned in the manual, and disconnecting the battery didn’t do anything. So, I called my mom to come get me, and she took me home to pick up the Integra so I could at least get around. I called my boss to let him know what was going on (which he laughed his ass off about later), and called the nearest Land Rover dealership in Richmond. After waiting on hold for fifteen minutes listening to some woman with a fake German accent (odd, considering it’s a British company) tell me how prestigious the Land Rover marque is, I finally got to talk to someone in the service department, who gave me this incredibly long procedure on how to disarm it without a transmitter. I got a ride back to Wal-Mart (in case the solution did work), tried this sequence of actions, and on the fourth try it finally worked! Oh, and the best part is, Land Rovers are prone to spontaneously arm the alarm system for no apparent reason at any time (as told by the guy at the LR dealership).
Later this evening, I spent some quality time in the cab and got a lot of work done on it. I patched some torn carpeting, re-attached the rear door panel that had come loose, glued down some loose dash panels, finally found and removed the hands-free cellphone system, found the end of the cellphone antenna cable (which might actually be usable with an adapter), cleaned up some wiring under the dash, and found two pens, a pencil, and a McDonalds straw in various nooks and crannies. I’ve also gotten the CB installed finally, rewired the trailer hitch, cleaned up the wiring for my satellite tuner, and removed the crossbars for the roof rack. I think I’m making excellent progress, and I’m hoping to get some photos taken of it very soon.
