Wow…

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

So, two posts ago, I mentioned how the company I work for could evaporate any day now if my boss doesn’t get off his ass and find a buyer (or pay the bills, either one will work). Out of the blue, someone emailed me and gave me a very good lead on a new job. No details yet, don’t want to spoil anything, but it kinda freaked me out because these things don’t just happen to me, my luck ain’t that good :-P. So, we’ll see what happens.

In other news, my finances have straightened themselves out since my last post, and I will most definitely be going to Anthrocon this year, woohoo! Can’t wait to see everyone again :-D

A website update isn’t very likely this weekend, since Chapter 3 of Lupinia hasn’t even been finished yet, but we’ll see. Stupid dead HD got my schedule all out of whack, but I’m not going to give up on the project! I’m going to get it done before AC even if I have to chain myself to the desk!

The Rover’s check-engine light has finally been fixed, turns out it was a vacuum hose problem. It still needs significant work, including a new AC compressor clutch, and the left tailight/marker lights still won’t work, and it probably needs an alignment and new shocks. But, it runs noticably better now, so that’s a plus. The Integra was also just in the shop for a new bearing and to make the emissions light turn off.

I also have a nice drop-in charger for my Kenwood HT on the way, should be here before AC. I wanted to get a high-capacity battery, but I couldn’t find one online, and I won’t be able to make it to the HAM radio supply store before the con. Oh well, with a 1-2 hour charge time on the new charger, I shouldn’t have much to worry about.

I’m Alive!

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

Finally got my machine put back together, so life is good now :-)

Work sucks worse now. The company I work for may completely vanish any day now, according to my boss. Hopefully I’ll be able to make Anthrocon work.

Fox rocks, he’s getting set up down here remarkably fast, and my mom loves him, so all is good.

Look for a website update this weekend ;-)

Data Issues

Saturday, June 18th, 2005

Bad news: I lost most of the data on my secondary hard drive.

Good news: Since this time, there’s no physical damage to the drive, I’m able to recover it, and with the help of [info]fox_cub and [info]orca_and_mommy, I have a spiffy program that seems to be working.

More bad news: All my installers and documents are on the secondary drive, so the website update I’d planned for yesterday will be postponed ’til sometime next week. I’ll be posting some other writings, as well as the first chapter of the Volkvladenie series, a project by [info]ghostway that will hopefully be recurring :-)

Computer Joys

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Attention everyone: If anyone ever hears me talk about reinstalling Windows on my main system ever again, please hit me. A lot.

My machine has needed a reinstallation for quite awhile, so I decided to do it last night, using Fox’s machine as a backup server. I got through the reformat and the first part of the installation with no trouble, then it rebooted for the first time. After booting from the HD, it said that my D drive (secondary HD with EVERYTHING on it) needed to be checked for errors. I figured I’d let it, and it said it fixed almost a quarter-million index errors. Then, it started with “Recovering orphaned file {filename}”, followed by “Insufficient disk space to recover lost data”. And it’s doing this on pretty much every file on the drive, and still going from last night (only halfway done so far).

Is this going to lose any data? If so, would cancelling it (ie, forcing a restart) make it worse? Fortunately, I don’t have to deal with a physically damaged drive this time, so chances of recovery are higher, but it still makes me very nervous, especially considering what happened last time I rebuilt this computer.

New Harrisonburg Fur!

Sunday, June 12th, 2005

Fox made it down here safely, after his hectic week of packing. I kinda dropped the ball getting things ready for his arrival, but everything’s fine. He has one big bitch of a moving truck! It’s a full-size panel truck with a 26′ cargo box, plus 12′ of car trailer, for a total of about 45 feet of vehicle. Thankfully, our street parking is seldom used, so we had no problem stashing it out front.

Friday, he got a bit of a late start (packing takes time, ya know), and made it here at about 3:30am. We unloaded his clothes and stuff at the house, had a nice rest, and worked on the rest of it Saturday. He rented a unit at Mini-Stor-It, and we unloaded the bulk of his stuff into there. And, with the help of a very strong buddy of mine, we had the whole truck unloaded in two hours. Back at the house, we replaced my double bed with a queen bed he brought, and set up his computer and such. Talk about a busy day!

Today was much more relaxed, we took a load of stuff to my storage unit, rearranged it quite a bit (Fox is the master at packing!), and then went out for a nice dinner at Dan’s Steakhouse. We stopped by the Massanutten History overlook on Rt. 211 for a short little hike, and he’s now playing a FarCry final tournament.

So, if any of my local buddies want to get together and do something this week, just let me know :-D

Never Work For A Small ISP

Tuesday, June 7th, 2005

Work today sucked ass. A lot.

I got up late, and was over a half-hour late to work. When I arrived, there were three cars in our 4-car parking lot, several customers standing around, and someone else pulling in behind me. Now, I’ve been this late (or worse) before, and no one’s ever noticed. However, there was a system issue going on this weekend, and I had a bunch of angry customers wanting to know why their service wasn’t working.

Lupinia Update Delayed

Friday, June 3rd, 2005

Well, I got the story finished on time, but I didn’t get the actual website pages finished tonight like I’d planned. Fear not, though, it’ll be up tomorrow. I’ll work on the page updates at work, and upload ‘em when I get to Fox’s place, sometime between 10 and 11 Friday night.

New Local Fur!

Thursday, June 2nd, 2005

Yay for random evenings! Yesterday, an old friend from JMU’s GLBT student club IMed me for the first time in ages and said we should get together for coffee sometime. This was a bit suprising, and perked my curiousity, so I figured sure, it’ll be fun.

We went to IHOP at about 11:30, and chatted for hours about all sorts of stuff. He’s a really cool, fun guy, and it turns out he’s a fur too, or at least into furry stuff. So, the count is now at six total furs in the Harrisonburg area! Wee! [bounces lots]

I’ll leave his name out for now, not sure if he wants it posted :-)
