Define Cynical Infected

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

On the Ozy & Millie mailing list, someone discovered a spyware/virus infection in the code for the O&M fan forum, Define “Cynical”. Before doing anything on this site, please read my reply to him, and do NOT visit any URLs in this message:

When I accessed the actual board, I got a blocked cookie request from toolbardollars.biz, it seems than an infected file has embedded itself in the forum.

Upon viewing the source code, it seems that there’s an Iframe embedded in the source code for the forum that loads http://toolbardollars.biz/dl/adv553.php.

To view the site safely, add the following lines to your HOSTS file (on WinXP, it’s in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc):

127.0.0.1 toolbardollars.biz
127.0.0.1 www.toolbardollars.biz

This will prevent any access to the malicious site, and allow safe browsing until the forum is repaired. If you do not have antivirus software installed, and you’ve visited the Define Cynical board, please do a full system scan before viewing any sensitive data on your computer. And please send a link to this to any Define Cynical members who may not have heard yet.

Fucking Psycho Internet User

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

For those who aren’t aware, I’m a member of the DSL Reports forums. I was checking the site a few days ago, and one of the most-popular threads was one titled “I’m Gone Folks“, and started by a name I recognized. I knew very little about this person, except that he’e a gifted RF engineer, and runs a site with custom-designed wi-fi antenna schematics. The responses were a mix of “don’t go” and “good riddance”, so I looked through this guy’s posts and saw that he’s pretty abrasive, and a hard-core conservative. So, I wrote a reply and said “You’re kind of a dick, but a genius when it comes to wireless stuff. People are going to disagree, that’s the nature of forums, so why leave?” Short and sweet, perhaps a bit too short, but I thought I got my point across that I didn’t think he should leave.

Late that evening, I received an email from the guy.

Megaplex

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

First of all, it was quite amusing to see all the replies to the last post. I was in a silly mood :-P

I made the reservations for Fox and I for Megaplex yesterday. We’ll be checking in on Thursday, March 16th, and checking out Monday, March 20th. We’re looking for roomates, so if anyone would like to stay with us at the con, let us know. It’d be about $138 per person if we split the room four ways, or $110 per person split five ways. Babyfurs preferred, but anyone is welcome.

Also, we’re looking for people to put in the truck for the trip down. If we can get enough people, the Rover would actually be more cost-effective than the Integra (and yes, it will be put back together before then, or replaced entirely with another Discovery). I have two maybes, we need five people total. My backseats don’t have the best legroom, but it is a fairly wide vehicle and they’re really quite comfy. Again, let me know if you’re interested. Gas would be about $50/person for the trip down and back combined.

One More Truck Post

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

Oh, I almost forgot about two things.

1. I finally got the grille in, and it looks SEXY! I need to trim it a tad more, since my measurements were a bit off or something, but it looks very nice. Pics will be coming soon, I promise!

2. Fox and I replaced the fan belt in the truck, and discovered two interesting problems. The old belt was routed over the pullies wrong, and the spring-part of the tensioner was frozen solid. I sprayed some PB Blaster on the tensioner, which freed it up, and we put the belt back on. Not only does the alternator work properly now, but the AC compressor doesn’t squeal anymore, meaning that it wasn’t really bad in the first place like I thought it was. Yay! Three quirks with one stone!

Down To Danville (Again)

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

RECAP: My truck has severe rust, to the point of needed a whole new floor for the driver’s footwell. It’s too severe to simply patch. I found a Rover parts guy in Danville, VA, who said he could get me a floor. First time I went there, we found rust on the floor he thought was good. I contacted him this week, and he said he got another Discovery in from Texas that he was pretty certain was good, so I made plans to go get it.

Yesterday was the day I chose for the trip. LilPup was having a party at his new place from 3:00pm ’til whenever, and Shortwave (who lives in Philly) had offered previously to do the floorpan. So, I figured I’d drive to Danville, get the parts, then head up to Philly, crash at Pup’s, and go to Shortwave’s on Saturday.
