Truck Stuff

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Yesterday, Fox was searching Ebay for Rover parts, and found a cruise control diagnostics book. Having been through a lot of work trying to fix my cruise control in the truck, I figured this was worth the $10 the seller was asking for it. So, I ordered it. In the past, every time I buy (or receive) something for the truck, something else breaks. Based on this track record, going off-roading shortly after this purchase was probably a bad idea. But, I’ve had cabin fever from not off-roading for many many months now, I fixed a bunch of stuff on the truck, and dammit, I wanted to hit the trails! Fox wanted to come as well, so we hit the road this afternoon to check out a new area.

Motley Fucking Crue!

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Thanks to [info]canid_anubis, I got to see Motley Crue live at the Baltimore Arena! Originally, it was going to be me & Fox going, but he’s sick & stuff and couldn’t come. So everyone give him hugs and chicken soup :-)

First off, the seats were AMAZING. We were just off the right corner of the stage, four rows back, directly under the right speaker bank. And we had an unobstructed, though sideways, view of everything on the stage. I could’ve tossed something under-hand at the stage and beaned the bass player in the head, we were that close. The show was amazing beyond words, though Velvet Revolver was better (duh).

There are few things that can lift my spirits faster than a good rock concert. My ears are ringing louder than any other sound in the room, I can barely talk, and my feet & arms ache, plus I spent almost 8 hours total driving today, but damn. It was worth all of it and more.

A million thanks to Canis for the ticket, you officially kick tail :-)

Currently, my hosting account has 1000mb of disk space, and 40gb/month of data transfer. I set up an account for someone else recently, and new accounts with the same host have 10000mb disk space and 250gb/month bandwidth. So, I sent an email to the company:

Monitors

Monday, February 13th, 2006

Several weeks ago, I was doing some work on my sister’s computer, and noticed that the monitor looked exceptionally red. Like, no-green-channel red. After testing against another monitor, I confirmed my suspicions, the monitor’s green thingy had failed. It is, after all, a Sony Trinitron that’s about 8 years old, and was purchased used from the hospital. However, before we moved, it was the best 17″ monitor I owned, with a crisp picture and nice refresh rate. After we moved, I installed a DVD player in her computer, and she started complaining about the monitor turning off while she watched movies. So, I disabled the power-save setting, instructing her to turn the monitor off when she wasn’t using it (I keep her machine locked down pretty tight, she has a tendency to screw up any computer she touches). She, of course, ignored this, and has left it on 24/7 pretty much since late August with no screen saver. I let it happen, since while I liked that monitor, I had spares.

Office 2003 SP2 Alert

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

Quoted from an MSDN document:

A recent decision from a court case has determined that certain portions of code found in Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Access 2003, Microsoft Office XP Professional and Microsoft Office Access 2002 infringe a third-party patent. As a result, Microsoft must make available a revised version of these products with the allegedly infringing code replaced.

To comply with the court order Microsoft is now requiring all future deployments of Microsoft Office Professional 2003 and Microsoft Access 2003 to include service pack 2. Microsoft is also requiring all new deployments of Microsoft Office XP Professional and Access 2002 to include a special patch.

Customers who have previously installed affected products are being requested to voluntarily install the patch although installation is not required. In order to ensure customers are aware of these new requirements, Microsoft has been mailing notification letters throughout the month of January.

We have received requests from customers to provide more information about the situation leading to this requirement. The attached frequently asked questions document goes into more detail on the circumstances related to this requirement, information on deployment and additional context to the legal situation.

Use caution when installing this patch, if you do at all. It has a tendency to break Office programs and cause inexplicable crashing. If you have a bootleg copy of the software, I definitely wouldn’t recommend installing the update. Just a heads-up.

Boots

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

While I was out running errands with my mom, she decided that she was going to buy me some boots, since there’s allegedly a blizzard coming in a few hours, and all I have are old crappy tennis shoes and sexy-but-uncomfortable motorcycle boots. So, whatever, I can’t complain too much about free shoes. We went to this place called Super Shoes, which has a huge selection at closeout/outlet prices, as well as uniform shoes for various institutions and such. If you needed nurse shoes or something, this would be the place. So, we go in, and I glanced at some hiking boots (if she’s buying me shoes, I at least want something I can use year-round), and saw a large banner at the back of the store that said “Law Enforcement Footwear”. Naturally, this piqued my curiousity, so I headed back and saw “Tactical/Special Forces Boots” on sale. They kick tail! They have a reinforced fiberglass frame, a zipper down the side (in addition to laces) for easy on/off, and they’re even lighter than my trustworthy tennis shoes, and more comfy!

Yes, I know, it’s a post about shoes. But I’ve never owned a pair of boots in my life that were more comfortable than my tennis shoes. Ever. So this is my happy moment :-)

Fun With Idiots

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Normally, if someone IMs and asks anything resembling “a/s/l?” in the first five lines, they promptly go on ignore. However, I was bored this evening, so I decided to actually chat with him. The whole time, I was trying to make him shut up and leave me alone. Here’s the chat log, keep in mind that nothing said in here is necessarily factual or close to it. Enjoy! :-)
