Today…

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Today, I say goodbye to asshole customers.
Today, I say goodbye to driving 100 miles a day.
Today, I say goodbye to 9 hours a day of city traffic.
Today, I say goodbye to constant near-wrecks.
Today, I say goodbye to mysterious Asian food spilling in my car.

Because today, the delivery company I worked for closed permanently.
And tomorrow, I start my life anew.

Transmission fluid has relatively little taste, but its texture is absolutely revolting when it gets in your mouth.

So, I was bored tonight, and decided to flip through the quizzes at OKCupid.com to see if there was anything fabulous to take. Found the Trekkie Test, it made me giggle:

Live Journal Drama

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Yay, drama in LJ management! First off, if you haven’t heard, LJ has decided to phase out Basic accounts, which are currently an ad-free option with limited capabilities, and most people have that account type. The current “Plus” account will be the only free option, and this account type has extended capabilities, but requires you to look at ads all over the place, and display them on your journal.

By doing this, they’ve effectively shifted the motivation to purchase an upgraded account from “get more features” to “get rid of ads”, which is a very bad reason to buy an account, and will almost certainly lead to decreased account sales. Thus, the next step will be to start feeding ads to paid users, a little at a time. And from there…Well, I’m not sure what comes after that, because I doubt I’ll be here long enough to find out.

The second bit of drama comes more recently, and is a lesser issue in my opinion, but has some people up in arms. Apparently, LJ decided to start censoring their Popular Interests list (something I didn’t know existed) and removing a collection of terms from the list. Most of them are fairly benign (boys, girls, guys), some of them are somewhat logical (yaio, bondage, hardcore), and others are kinda homophobic (bisexuality, faeries, but however you feel about this, it needs to be known. Further discussion and in-depth analysis of this are available here: http://stewardess.insanejournal.com/228245.html

Given the other crap that’s happened around here, next month will probably be the last time I renew my paid account (annual billing), pending some major re-thinking on SUP’s behalf.

EDIT: I thought Six Apart and SUP were the same thing, but I was mistaken. My references to Six Apart have been adjusted accordingly. Also, here’s a link regarding the account type changes: http://news.livejournal.com/106909.html

EDIT 2: Someone at SUP removed the interests filter, woot! http://community.livejournal.com/changelog/6283445.html

Unreal Tournament?

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

After playing spending my weekend at the LAN party at Madicon, I’ve been re-inspired to set up an Unreal Tournament 2004 server on Lupinia’s server. I was going to do it anyway, initially, but I don’t play it very often due to a lack of opponents (bots make good target practice, but they get boring after awhile).

The downside is that there doesn’t appear to be a shortcut around installing the game from the DVD, even if you’re only running it as a dedicated server. I tried a few options to make this work, but none of them did. The DVD image is 3.5gb, and while I may be able to compress that a bit, I probably can’t do it enough to make a major difference in the upload time.

So, if I go to the trouble of doing this, would anyone be interested in using it? I’d rather not do it if I’ll end up playing by myself, and I don’t particularly want to make it an advertised, public server. I just want some folks to play a fun game with :-)

Madicon: Day 1

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Wee, the first day of Madicon is over. I have to say, the con seems a lot more organized this year than any other year I’ve been to it (and this is my 5th), and the LAN room in particular kicks ass! It’s being run by a group from the Hampton Roads area, and they do this on a pretty regular basis.
