Wow, I haven’t updated this thing in a long time! Let’s see…

I’m not in high school anymore, but I was not too long ago, and that’s when I came out, so this gets posted here
Ever do something that was fun a long time ago, then you try to do it later in life and it ends up sucking? That’s kinda how my night went tonight.

Exactly five hours ago, my incredibly annoying relatives from Georgia arrived to wreak their annual havoc on Harrisonburg. Thankfully, they always stay at their timeshare up in Massanutten, and I have to work this weekend (I’ll never be happier to work a weekend!), so hopefully I won’t see much of them.
I’m particularly dreading their visit because during their last visit, my cousin set off my incredibly-inaccurate gaydar many times. I asked him on AIM later if he was gay, he said he wasn’t (duh), and he asked why I was asking. I took a gamble and came out to him, and the gamble didn’t pay off. He seemed very distant for the rest of the conversation, and I haven’t spoken to him or seen him online since. I’m a little worried that he told his parents, who are a couple of prejudiced hicks (I can’t believe they’re on my MOM’s side of the family sometimes, she’s supposed to have the good relatives). I’m also a bit concerned that he’ll mention it when there are people around, so far my mom is the only one in the family who knows (that I know of).
Speaking of gayness, in light of Skippy’s upcoming visit to the Valley, I’m thinking about coming out to my sister. The other night at Boston Beanery, we were talking about gay people, and she seemed ok with the subject, she even knows two gay kids in her grade, and she’s 13. So, I’ll probably do that after the Georgians leave. Any advice on how I should go about it? I haven’t done this in quite awhile, I was going to talk to her over AIM, since that’s the primary mode of communication for both of us.
Yes that’s right, that evil anti-gay bill proposed by the VA legislature actually passed, apparently by veto-proof margins. I didn’t know this happened, until I received the following email:

Well, my grandma said she’s loan me the money for a new video card and to get my hard drive restored, so I’ll get that sent off tomorrow. Yay for grandmas!
Also, all you local people, there will be a demonstration going on at Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday morning (April 7th) from 7:30-10:30 AM to protest the recent discrimination against GLBT faculty, staff, and students. All are welcome to come, it will be in front of the campus center (on Park Avenue, I think, just look for all the commotion). Come with a peaceful attitude (no signs), and wear a bright (rainbow) colour. From the email I received:
Many of you know that there is a “homosexual issue” at Eastern Mennonite University. Faculty has be let go becuase of who they choose to love, students fear what might happen if anyone on campus finds out they are queer. This needs to change.
We will be laying a 100 foot pride flag in front of the campus center on wednesday morning and ask that you come stand with us in solidarity and support. Our goal is to create a safe space on campus where we can assure people saftey from harrasment, persection, and disrespect.
PLEASE come join us. We need to show the administration that discrimination is not acceptable.
Details:
7:30 -10:30 Wednesday, morning, april 7th
wear a bright (a ROYGBIV color) T-shirt
and come with a peaceful attitude
(Please do not bring signs)
Please make every effort to be there
If you are in the area, PLEASE PLEASE come, even if it’s only for a little while. This crap has got to stop before it gets out of hand, and the more people who show up, the better. Assuming I can get up on time, I’ll be there for the duration of the event. Please come and show your support for GLBT equality!
[I edited and reposted this. Enjoy!]
I posted a really angsty depressive rant a few hours ago (which most of you can’t see), but everything is better now, and I can post about what happened the last few days.
A few weeks ago I got an email from PFLAG stating that a gay Turner Ashby HS student was looking to interview some local gay people for a school newspaper article. I finally met with him Sunday at a park in Bridgewater, and he asked me some questions about what it was like growing up gay in a conservative household. He was kinda flirty after awhile, but I think I freaked him out at first since I was hoping to make it back to Madicon after the interview, and I had on a black shirt, motorcycle boots, black fake-leather wristband, and my black collar, plus my long hair and “Ozzy” sunglasses :). His facial expressions definitely showed shock when I got there, I think he was expecting a more preppy person. It was amusing.
That reminds me, I need more black shirts, they seem to look the best on me, especially when I take the time to straighten my hair. I might have to break down and [gasp] SPEND MONEY ON CLOTHES!
After the interview, I went back to JMU to find that Madicon had closed down already. Oh well, I got my $15 worth, got to see old friends and do new things, and I got to abuse my parking privileges ALL WEEKEND! Yay! I wish I hadn’t missed the art auction, though.
I went to see Scooby Doo 2 with my mom and sister, which I normally wouldn’t have done, but free movies are always good. The storyline was marginally better than the first one in my opinion, but the references to “Coolsville” rather than an actual city got very old very fast, and the animation was so horrendous that it killed the whole thing for me. There were a couple scenes where Shaggy was holding Scooby, and Shaggy’s arm actually went THROUGH Scooby’s body! Ugh! I could do better than that on my home computer! Not to mention the fact that I’m so tired of seeing CGI movies and TV shows I could puke, but that’s another rant.
Monday seems like so long ago, but it was today! I went to work at 1:00 for a training session with the IT department at the hospital so I’d be able to access my email and such, which was a ridiculous waste of my time, but at least I was getting paid for it. I showed up a little late, and one of the instructors tried to help me “catch up” on the part of the lesson I missed, and she acted like I was some sort of kindergartener. The part I missed was about logging in on a Windows 2000 machine, and she was about to physically place my fingers over the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys when I pointed out that I hold an MCP in Windows 2000 Administration and I could handle it. She remained unconvinced and continued to watch over my shoulder, which was a pain in the tail but better than her pressing the keys for me. She finally left me alone when I identified and fixed an explorer.exe crash before she could finish telling me how to get to the task manager to figure out what was eating up the processor.
I was going to go right to work from the training class, but I decided to go home and waste time, which I did so efficiently that I forgot to leave before my mom came home. Good thing I was there, though, because she told me that ANOTHER of my close friends was in a severe accident today! He was driving his Civic hatchback along a rural road (which is often used for racing), and wrecked. The details are sketchy, but he was moving very fast, he broke both his legs and an arm, they had to fly him and his passenger to UVA Medical Center (Charlottesville) via Pegasus LifeFlight, and he had surgery this evening. No information has been released about his passenger yet, but I should know more tomorrow. Anyway, that tore me up pretty badly, and I didn’t want to go to work, but I need money. I stayed until 11:30, for a total of seven hours today.
By the time I got home, I was very depressed and lonely, but I’m in a much better mood now. See, when I was in FL, Skippy and I grew very close over the course of the weekend, and when I got back and scanned the pic we commissioned together, he mentioned that people kept asking if we were mates whenever he talked about that pic (note, “mate” among furs is approximately equal to boyfriend/girlfriend or lover). I asked if he wanted to be mates, and he initially said no, which hurt because I really like him. However, we talked about it some more tonight, and we’re going to give the long-distance relationship thing a shot and see what happens. I promised myself years ago that I’d never do another LDR, but since other furs are essentially nonexistant around here, and I can’t afford to move anytime in the near future, travel and the internet are my only refuge.
Oh yeah, and I added some new LJ icons, taken from the two conbadges I commissioned at PPMP. Yay!
Ok, as many of you know, I’ve been a posting member of the www.pew-fellows.com website, and to be honest I’m a little tired of being the token gay guy there. So, if any of you feel inclined, post to any of the following threads, all of which have to do with homosexuality. Grazie!

These are amusing, common questions asked of gay people turned around to be asked of straight people. Written in 1977.

Something definitely note-worthy: I had a very interesting conversation with the cousin I suspected of being gay. It turns out that he’s not, but while we were on the subject I come out to him. It was very, umm, interesting, and liberating; one less family member I have to act straight in front of.
